The Institutional Compliance Office is responsible for enforcing and overseeing all aspects of the University’s Nondiscrimination Policy, including compliance with Title IX. The Institutional Compliance Office receives and investigates reports of potential misconduct, communicates regularly with parties and witnesses, coordinates supportive and protective services, and facilitates hearings related to violations.
About the Institutional Compliance Officer
James D. (JD) Smiser has served as Truman State University’s Institutional Compliance Officer and Title IX Coordinator since October 2024. JD was also the Director of Citizenship and Community Standards from 2016 to 2025. JD earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Truman in 1993, majoring in Justic Systems. JD earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Law in 2002.
Prior to returning home to Truman in 2016, JD was in private practice in Northeast Missouri.
JD enjoys directly interacting with the students, faculty, staff, and guests who make the Truman community great. In his free time JD enjoys spending time with his wife Terri (also a Truman Graduate), their sons Drew (also a Truman graduate) and Adam, their grand dog, Remi, and their two cats.
